Much Ado About Bike Lanes

By Jason Leach

The people of Toronto clearly aren't as progressive or in touch with the real issues in their city as I had previously thought if a single bike lane can become the front issue of a municipal election.

For many politicians a full-scale culture war sometimes seems easier to manage than rational discourse. Wedge politics are inherently undemocratic and ultimately fail to solve complex problems.

Toronto has never struck me as being that progressive or in touch with the real issues, despite its policy successes.

Great link, I liked this line:

"""It's time to move the focus from recreational paths to commuter routes that help people reach the places they work, study, shop and dine."""

Seems like this issue has been coming up alot on RTH lately, nice to see more people are getting the right idea about why we need bike lanes.

Yep, Edmonton is truly a nightmare to bike in. It's the only place I've actually been chased, not just yelled at, by a driver for passing him in traffic. Cyclists there tend to stick to side streets and off street paths to avoid traffic. However, it's no different from any large city in that the bike is the fastest and most convenient mode of transport in the central area.

The Toronto Sun editorial section went right off the rails on this topic today... just crazy. But what do you expect from Toronto's favourite primary reader level conservative rag.
