Federal Election 2011

Candidate List Nears Finalization

By Ryan McGreal
Published April 12, 2011

Tomorrow, once the registered candidate list is finalized on the Elections Canada website (execrable as it is), we will begin sending our RTH campaign questions to the candidates.

Here is the list of questions, inspired in large part by the responses to our earlier call for suggestions:

Note: Some of the listed candidates on the RTH Elections site are currently missing contact information. If you have websites, email addresses or other info for any candidate, please email it to me or post it below in the comments.

What about adding something to the question like....

If not, what will you do to ensure that it is completed in an effective and timely manner?

"It does not appear the Green Party has a candidate in Hamilton Centre.

The party is blaming returning officer Jim Winn for the situation, but it doesn’t appear to have any avenue of appeal. Elections Canada spokesperson Nathalie Demontigny said Wednesday night the agency can investigate if there is a problem with a candidate being left off a riding list, but admitted a returning officer has the final say."

The Hamilton Spectator
44 Frid Street, HAMILTON, Ontario L8N 3G3

Dear Editor,

Re: Odious to Everyone.

Why, as an Officially Nominated Candidate for Hamilton Centre, am being excluded on the Spectator “CANADA VOTES” Section?

And why does the Hamilton Spectator post and identify Karen Burson as the Green Party Candidate for Hamilton Centre when Elections Canada hasn’t confirmed her Nomination?

After writing to you yesterday, then visiting “Canada Votes” this morning, I couldn’t believe that you had still excluded me from the Listings. Then checking Elections Canada web site http://www.elections.ca/scripts/pss/candidates.aspx?L=e&ED=35031&EV=34&EV_TYPE=1&PC=L8L6E4&Prov=&ProvID=&MapID=&QID=8&PageID=17&TPageID= I was even more surprised to find that you were still listing the Greens when there was no Nominated Candidate in Hamilton Centre and yet, you still excluded myself and the Marijuana Party as Candidates for Hamilton Centre in your paper.

I would call that discriminatory journalism and would think, would be odious to everyone!

Be well and prosper,

In peace, bless us all

Reverend Brother Michael J. Baldasaro

If possible, please add this question:

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage has recommended that CBC's annual parliamentary grant be raised from $33 per Canadian to $40. Will you support this recommendation?

The Hamilton Spectator

Re: Has the Spectator no sense of integrity?

Thank you Mr. Elliott for your reply, (see below) and eventual correction, to my query regards mis-listing the Green Party on “HAMILTON VOTES”.

Why is it that although the Spec.com, acting upon my notification and having finally removed the listing for Green Party Candidate, Meagan Byrne from "HAMILTON VOTES", that the Spec.com continues to list, in their Elections Coverage @ http://www.thespec.com/topic/hamiltoncentre Meagan Byrne as the Green Party Candidate Nominated to run in Hamilton Centre? Is it because out of all the Ridings through-out all of Canada, the only Riding that failed to Nominate a Green Party Candidate is Hamilton Centre?

And why is The Marijuana Party and myself not listed? I am a Candidate, Nominated to Run on behalf of the Marijuana Party and should have equal rating with all other Candidates without bias, or prejudice. Has the Spectator no sense of integrity? Everyone duly Nominated Candidate should be listed equally in your Coverage upon the Spec.com web page @ http://www.thespec.com/topic/hamiltoncentre

"Coverage of Hamilton Centre riding in 2011 federal election.

• Candidates: Meagan Byrne GRN, James Byron CON, David Christopherson NDP, Anne Tennier LIB"

Thank you in advance for your immediate response to my query.

Reverend Brother Michael J. Baldasaro

The "(see below)" reply...

From: Elliott, Howard [mailto:helliott@thespec.com]
Sent: Friday, April 15, 2011 9:26 AM
To: John Akpata; Jack Peach
Cc: MacIntyre, Nicole; Michael Baldasaro; Graeme O'Farrell; Terry Parker Jr.; Taylor Pearce; radical Marijuana
Subject: RE: Odious to Everyone.

As I said, this was an oversight, compounded by technical problems. They have been resolved and the candidate is listed.
