If you missed last December's inspiring talk on The Ambitious City with Toronto Chief Planner Jennifer Keesmaat, Cable 14 has posted a video recording on YouTube.
The full video runs an hour and 47 minutes and includes moderation by Urbanicity publisher Martinus Geleynse and an introduction by Hamilton Chamber of Commerce President Keanin Loomis.

More seriously, I was truly impressed with Mrs Keesmaat in the video. She really gets it!
Toronto is truly fortunate to have her as Chief Planner.
What struck me the most was her "low hanging fruit" for Hamilton. Those two items would be:
1) Cycle infrastructure.
2) Children walking and cycling to school.
Those are two cheap and easy to do items.

Does Hamilton have a Chief Planner? The City's Planning and Economic Development department is apparently split into 10 divisions, but seems to have no visible hierarchy. All of the following could reasonably be said to fall under the jurisdiction of a Chief Planner:
• Community Planning and Design;
• Policy Planning;
• Development Planning;
• Economic Development; and
• Growth Management
Yet there is no sense of a grand vision or a guiding hand at City Hall. Just a revolving door of planners who may or may not have a modest amount of influence over projects they work on directly.
